The Australian Government will provide $80,000 to the Centre for Groundwater Studies (CGS) for the review and rewriting of educational materials for Australian Groundwater School training courses.

Conducted under the auspices of the CGS, Australian Groundwater Schools provide training in the fundamentals of groundwater science, technology and management to professionals and technical staff involved in groundwater management, environment consulting, mining, hydrogeology, land care and other natural resource management as well as specialists and non-specialists working on a range of land and water resource management issues.

As a core member of the CGS, the UNSW Water Research Laboratory will play a major role in both the updating of educational material comprising the Australian Groundwater School Notes and the delivery of short-courses.

Operating since 1987, the CGS has become a key institution for groundwater research and education both nationally and internationally. The Centre for Groundwater Studies is a cooperative research and education venture with strong focus on processes of groundwater recharge, discharge, contamination, remediation and management. It addresses major land and water resources issues in Australia and overseas through interdisciplinary research by its member organisations, agencies and companies.

The funding is part of a $2.6 million funding package for projects increasing levels of knowledge and capacity to support improvements in Australia's water management and use, announced last month by Minister for the Environment and Water Resources, Malcolm Turnbull.
